The Chinese

by Shin Yu Jung

“The Chinese are very superstitious. They believe the seventh lunar month is unlucky. That’s because they believe the spirits of the dead come up from the underworld. The spirits come back to cause trouble for living people. So tey call it the ‘ghost month.’ During the ghost month, people don’t usually move to a new house or get married. They worry about having bad luck. Some shops even close because people don’t like to buy much during the ghost month. And people burn lots of paper money. Why? Because burning money makes the ghosts happy!”

I saw this essay in a book.
