Terry Fox
by Teacher Jon
Terry Fox is a very famous person in Canada. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 28, 1958. Later, his family moved to B.C. He loved playing sports when he was in school, especially basketball. He was shorter than most other students, though, so he had to practice more in order to play well. He was also very good at swimming and diving. His dream was to become a P.E. teacher.
However, in 1977, when Terry was 18 years old, a doctor told him he had cancer in his right leg and that it would have to be amputated. After losing his leg, Terry decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He began in St. John’s, Newfoundland and planned to run all the way to Vancouver, B.C. He succeeded in running as far as Thunder Bay, Ontario. But he had to stop there because he became more sick. He died of pneumonia on June 28, 1981.
People in Canada are very proud of Terry Fox because, even after losing his leg, he never gave up. Today there are many statues of Terry Fox so people can remember what he did.
